Description
Paulius Kilbauskas and Tomoo Nagai - Dawn
To perform Elements live required two crucial components: Paulius’ deft handling of electronics and the additional percussion that permeates every track. It was impossible to bring all of the musicians featured on Elements from Bali to Lithuania. Instead, through a fortunate mutual connection, Paulius was able to collaborate with the acclaimed Japanese percussionist Tomoo Nagai. Tomoo is known for his use of locally chosen “ingredients” such as wood, stones and metal and was able to interpret and add his own uniquely resonant style to the album’s rhythms. Through extended improvisation sessions the two musicians became effortlessly synchronised and the musical component to Elements Live took shape.
In St. Catherine’s church, Vilnius, Paulius performed music from the album live electronically while Tomoo added texture. The crowd was seated around the performers, who occupied the centre of the room and were observable from all angles. Each audience member was provided with a pair of headphones resulting in an intimate sound. This listening experience was both totally personal and introspective while creating a complex sense of community and deeply felt collective experience. Elegant lighting features specifically designed for the circular environment illuminated the performers and accentuated the church’s architectural features. The night’s exceptional performances, combined with such a unique staging, resulted in a truly mesmeric experience for the audience. A live recording of the the show is being released as Elements Live in 2020 on The state51 Conspiracy.
